There are many important aspects to consider when creating a bedroom. In this room above all others, comfort is critical. After you have found the ideal mattress, pillows, and temperature to sleep for a full nine hours, it’s time to consider the look of the bedroom.

While there are infinite color schemes and styles to choose from when approaching bedroom design, I am sharing a bedroom that captures the personality of the people who live there. A familiar place to open and close one’s eyes.

For this bedroom, I hoped the resident would be cocooned in a soft but warm palate. But I wanted the palette to be somewhat restful, too, so I finished the walls in a textural lettuce green and white paper weave wallcovering. To inject a second layer of pattern, I chose to upholster a shaped headboard and cover it in a happy, John Robshaw Indian block print. The mixed scale of prints on the pillows complements and enhances the headboard fabric without competing with it. The bedside tables are our clients’ favorites that we repurposed for this space. They are wrapped in buttery green leather with wooden drawer fronts that add warmth to the cool green and blue fabrics. Because this is a girl’s bedroom, we added some fuchsia velvet leather to the sweet wicker chair and a pink-and-red embroidered fabric pillow.

When thinking about a bedroom design, here are some of the important elements to consider:

  1. Make sure the bed is comfortable for sitting up and reading. Upholstered headboards are always the softest.
  2. Allow for plenty of storage in the bedside table for books, a notepad, and anything else you want to tuck away out of sight.
  3. If the space allows for a chair, it’s nice to have a small but comfortable one where you can perch or throw your robe.
  4. Consider lighting and make sure bedside lamps are tall enough to provide ample reading light.
  5. Choose a palette and reinterpret it throughout the space. Here we used greens, navy, and hot pink.

While we tend to focus much design attention to the main living areas, the private spaces are just as important for our own enjoyment and well-being. Here I have selected furnishings, bedding, and artwork inspired by the room I designed for our clients. The pinks and greens are both colorful and restful at the same time and allow for a bedroom that is welcoming both during the day and at nighttime by lamplight.
